It might sound a bit unmicrosoftusual, but Microsoft has just recorded a lower quarterly revenue compared to Apple in 2011. Despite the high sales of the most recent version of Windows, the company slowly falls behind in the portable field, as tablets and smartphones gain popularity.

Microsoft has just presented the results of the past financial year, as well as the implementing priorities for the upcoming years. The past 12 months came with only a few releases on the market. In the educational domain, the financial year did bring a few major successes though. The primary mission of the company is to help its customers and partners to adopt the best strategy in implementing the cloud services and contributing to the competition growth by using the peak technologies. The implementing priorities are connected with the consumer segment.

However, 2011 represented a good year for the business Information Worker: Office 2010. At the same time, Lync Server 2010 saw a similar growth, not to mention about Office 365. The demand for productivity solutions externalized in the business numbers and in a high market interest. The Microsoft Office interest grew with 3%, while the messaging solutions based on Exchange Server 2010 gained 1%. Lync Server 2010 grew four times more compared to 2010, while the company recorded thousands of evaluation accounts for Office 365.

When it comes to Windows, the rate grew with close to 5% for the new computers. This is due to a wide variety of campaigns for new computers that come with a preinstalled version of Windows 7. This is because of the multiple partnerships Microsoft has with some of the most important manufacturers and retailers. Internet Explorer 9 brought in some extra cash too after its release in the spring of 2011. During the same year, the company managed to release the first cloud commercial service for Windows Business Group – Windows Intune. The service is useful to monitor and administer the computers in small and medium companies.

Some other fields Microsoft excelled in include Microsoft Dynamics, Windows Server and other tools, Windows Phone and a few anti-piracy campaigns.

On another hand, the net profit of Google grew with 28% in the third semester. The results of these statistics crushed the estimations. It was all possible due to the solid marketing and publicity sales, as well as a good cost control. At the same time, the company actions grew with about 6% after the financial rapport was published. Within the first 9 months of 2011, the total income of the company grew with 31%, from 20.8 billion USD to 7 billion USD. Therefore, the revenue equals 9.72 USD per action, way more compared to what the analysts expected – 8.74 USD per action. The company is a clear leader when it comes to web searching and publicity over the Internet. Before publishing the results, the expectations were quite pessimistic, especially for Europe. However, the general performances ignored all these calculations. According to the famous analyst Macquarie Ben Schachter, Google keeps showing the world that it is not immune to the market, but will still come up with better results compared to the traditional players.

The high demand for publicity – especially in Asia – and the quick evolution of businesses in the mobile world and display advertising have significantly helped the Google results for 2011. With all these, the company dropped a little in the Western Europe, but the mobile distribution might cover the losses. Larry Page, the general director of the company who took it over in 2011, has announced that he plans to reduce the rich portfolio and plans to direct all the resources towards the businesses with a high potential. In other words, Google mostly invests in the mobile businesses, where it directly competes with Apple, the iPhone manufacturer. The Android system developed by Google is already the platform with the highest growth and keeps gaining interest.

At the same time, Google announced that the social network launched in the summertime – Google+ – has reached around 50 million users. It gained 10 million after two weeks only. It is Google's plan to fight against the huge popularity of Facebook. Facebook is currently in a tight collaboration with Microsoft. At the same time, Microsoft is also collaborating with Twitter. These two networks are just as popular and had a serious word to say in the company's financial year. However, the battle is far from being over. These are just the first years of what is about to be the most important clash of the modern technology.
